My first mtb race in nearly a year so very excited. Arrived hoping for a slightly calmer race than the chaos at Blists Hill the previous day, so no mechanicals please! The course was harder than I expected, lots of winding around trees, then a couple of A-lines before the bumpiest field since Foxley in September last year. Warmed up around the course and was on 2nd row out of 2, but didn’t really matter as the race was nearly an hour long.
Too used to the fast, but not too fast starts in crit racing, the first few straights caught me out. I was last until Sam Ryland had a mechanical, and remained last until I overtook a rider before the forest. I was in an allright position after the forest, but once there my legs cried enough. I limped round before surrendering, and decided just to ride round until the finish. The next 2 laps were the most enjoyable, I just had fun going around knowing my race was over. I finished in 8th out of 9, and 9th didn’t even complete all the laps. Rest now, hope to be in better form for the racing to come.
