I went to Quarry Cross this weekend instead of the Welsh League because it was about a 45 min drive from our house while it would’ve been 2.5 hours to Swansea. The course preview made it look similar to the 3 peaks, only it was in a quarry and not over 3 ginormous hills. When we arrived, I found it difficult to ride this one small hill because there were lots of U12 riders pushing and making it impossible to ride. The rest of the course was fine, there were a couple of reasonably technical sections and a steep hill, which I could ride but decided against it. My warm-up was affected by not-working gears, but after some super speedy mechanics by Dad I was ready to race.
The race start didn’t go as planned, I was in about 5th position and nowhere near where I wanted to be. After the first time up the hill split everything up, I was in 4th position, and though 2nd an advantage, I was going to do my best to close the gap. On the 3rd lap I distanced myself from the other rider I was competing with to move up into 3rd, and with 2 laps to go I had about a 10 second lead. After the next lap I still had a 10 second lead, now it was starting to become worrying. At the top of the hill for the final time my mount was interfered by a rock, which caused me to dismount again to pick up enough speed. I finished 3rd, which was an extremely pleasing result.
